Kenny Roger’s Roasters is baaackkkk!
Sep 11th, 2009 by niceyfemme

They never left. I know.

But the quality of food did die for some time.

See Kenny’s (my term of endearment for them hhehe) was my favorite way back in 2003. I love their muffin, their spicy roasted chicken and java rice. My bestfriend and I always ate there when we were still in college.

Then the food I loved changed. Quality that is.

Muffin didnt taste as good, java rice seems like they just used some kind of food color in it and too few pimiento bits. So not my favorite anymore.

Then a few months ago, fire happened in Kenny Roger’s in SM Bacoor.

They undergo major renovation.

Took them months to finish.

What a nice surprise when they opened!

So spacious! so nice! I was tempted to try them again.

So me and my mom did last night…

I’m Craving for…. Chai Tow Kway or Fried Carrot Cake!
Aug 25th, 2009 by niceyfemme

It’s been 2 months now…. since I last had my fix of Singapore’s Carrot Cake. I used to have this favorite of mine everyday…. For breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. Yeah I’m like that, once I love something, in this case I’ll keep on eating it until I get tired of it. Carrot Cake? Still aint tired… hehehhe!

Here’s what Carrot Cake according to wikipedia…

black carrot cake

Chai tao kway (Traditional: 菜頭粿; Simplified: 菜头粿; POJ: chhài-thâu-koé; pinyin: càitǒugaǒ) is a common dish or dim sum of Teochew cuisine in Chaoshan (China), Singapore and Malaysia. It is also known as “fried carrot cake” or simply “carrot cake” in Southeast Asian countries, due to the fact that the word for daikon (POJ: chhài-thâu), one of its main ingredients, can also refer to a carrot (POJ: âng-chhài-thâu, literally “red radish”). However, it is not to be mistaken with the Western carrot cake.

It is made of rice flour and white radish. In Malaysia this is often served in large rectangular slabs which are steamed and then later fried whole.

In Singapore, however, it is more commonly cut into pieces and stir fried with soy sauce, eggs, garlic, spring onion and occasionally dried shrimp. There are two variants: the “white” version does not use sweet soy sauce, and the carrot cake is fried on top of a beaten egg to form a crust; the “black” version uses sweet soy sauce, and the egg is simply mixed in with the carrot cake.

Alternatives to Chai tao kway include those made of rice flour and taro.

Another photo with sambal, which for me is very very important… Black and white both my favorite! Yuuummmm!

Here is where I have tried an impressive one…. In Lau Pa Sat..

Lau-pa-sat-stall

this stall  sells  popular Char Kway Teow.. Oh here’s a photo of this other favorite..

Here I was in the same stall, confused which to order first pineapple fried rice or this char kway teow.

Oooh! Like I can taste this… so spicy! ;) and another favorite but oh-so-expensive…. Chicken Satay!satay

I don’t know but i like to pair this with Pineapple Fried Rice… (BTW, the photos marked keropok obviously I got from the internet.. these are the nicest I’ve found. Thanx to the owner of the photos!)

I have a lot of favorites, I can’t even mention all of them. There’s Salad Chicken Rice in Seng Huat in Bugis (as hot as hell but worth it) But going back, the one thing I’m really craving for right now is Chai tow kway… I have done researching in the internet so I could make it here in Manila… One thing missing… Sambal! I don’t know where to buy here or if it’s even available here. Could someone please tell me where to buy? I should have bought a big bottle when I was in there the last time. (Btw, the last time, I brought back green chillies and Chicken rice mix in bottle, but stupid me, I forgot to put in my checked in luggage so it was confiscated by the strict airport guy…)

Hmmm… Me, myself and I don’t stop until I get my fix heheh… So for now let me just share with you this video of carrot cake… I should be contented just watching for now huhuhuh….. ;(
