Fish Cakes
Feb 23rd, 2011 by niceyfemme

Had an excess lumpiang bangus filling and I was too lazy to wrap it up to make spring rolls (lumpia) so I just made them into fish cakes.

I mixed all purpose flour and cornstarch in a bowl, some freshly cracked pepper and salt, mix well. Then add an egg and beat nicely. Mix everything well. Fry.

This is so yummy. Ok I’m going to share a secret. Whenever I feel like I need to lose a few lbs. and is already thinking is apidexin safe, I eat milk fish. This works like a charm for me. When I’m tired of spring rolls, I make this.

Hotel Pier Cuatro
Jan 30th, 2011 by niceyfemme

Last week we went to Cebu and was searching for a place to stay at. We only have a fairly minimum requirement, that the place be clean, have the basic amenities and a reasonable cost. Just a clean room with clean bathroom. Even TV we can negotiate if the place doesn’t have it. We don’t need extravagant furnitures as we were only going to sleep there. Just a simple place that’s reasonably priced.

I had no idea where we should stay so I searched and searched for nice reviews of budget hotels in the area. Hotel Pier Cuatro was mentioned by an agency, of course they didn’t tell me that the hotel has it’s own website (they gave me their agency’s link) when I asked them for photos as they wouldn’t be able to get commissions if I book there directly. I checked it myself. I didn’t even know they have their own simple website.

Photo: from their website

I tried to do some research online and you know how unreliable those photo galleries are in their website and about how they look so far from reality? Well, I knew it would be a risk we had to take as I didn’t even find a reliable review about this hotel. I only know that it’s close to the ports/piers and to SM as I viewed it on google maps.

So we were pleasantly surprised  that the place is a little bit more than we hoped for. (Well, we, specially I have a very very low expectation based on the price they quoted us per room and per night.) First, they have a decent reception, bigger than I’m expecting to see. Fairly relaxed and simple lobby. They don’t have a software like Hotel Information System or Fidelio but it’s fine as they only have a few rooms.

When we saw the room I can say that we were pleased. We stayed at their Standard Room with twin beds Php 1180/night for 2 pax with one pillow in each bed, with breakfast for 2 pax.

Review: Which is the better Tuna Paella in Can?
Dec 15th, 2010 by niceyfemme

Their commercials intrigued me. Having an interest with anything that’s labeled healthy, I just had to try them myself. And I like paella. There’s one paella that I still remember though, the one we had in Boracay and I’m hoping one of these two will taste kind of similar to that.

The first tuna paella that came out in the market is the San Marino Tuna Paella which a popular couple celebrity in the commercial. I thought tuna paella is a great idea. So I bought two cans. I tried it and even though there was a lot of tuna in that can, the taste however didn’t suit my taste buds. I didn’t even finish the can as I only ate about a tablespoon.

A Little Celebration
Nov 8th, 2010 by niceyfemme

These past days had been busy and tiring. We had a little kind of  impromptu celebration at home and just invited a few people. Biglaan talaga. So in a day we did all the cooking until past midnight and the kids stayed here so we’ve been deprived of sleep but thanks to my reliable black out curtains and blinds, I’m still able to sleep until the sun is up to regain energy..

So we just whipped up a few dishes, baked this cake and prepared a salad.

This chocolate cake is by far the best tasting with oozing chocolatey flavor, best looking cake I have ever baked ever with minimal effort. I love how the design turned out pretty ok when I thought when I was doing it that it’s a big fail. I lost my offset spatula and piping bag, no cake board (this is placed in a plate), no chocolate to use so I melted little chocolate kisses and no reliable recipe to depend on so I baked by my gut feel. Then after all that it’s still a success. Nice. And best of all, even I can’t stop eating this. Wow.

Guests thought this is store bought. Love it when that happens hehehe. I love it when they rave about our food.

Sakunthala’s Indian Restaurant
Oct 20th, 2010 by niceyfemme

Roti Prata. After all the suspense in waiting to have you, you’re not as good as I thought you would be. Blame it on this curry sauce, bland and watery, not good.

I’ve been getting tired of Chinese food because aside from the occasional Beef Rendang (Malay food) that I’m eating, it’s mostly Char Kway Teow that I’m having when I don’t know what to have as it is my dependable yummy dish. So after countless whining to Bee about not knowing what to eat, he said he’ll bring me some place with nice Indian food he tried before with some other friends. He brought me to Mustafa, the Indian area in Singapore.

Seoul Garden
Oct 19th, 2010 by niceyfemme
20 September 2010
Seoul Garden, Bugis Junction

It was Bee and I’s nth monthsary and this time we decided to celebrate in Seoul Garden. I wanted to try this restaurant since last year and we’re only able to do it now. Eat as much as you can and you cook it yourself seemed kind of fun. So I picked up Bee from work and we headed to Bugis to pig out. :)

The restaurant was almost full house when we got there and lots of marinated meats greeted us at the entrance. There was enough choices but I have this thing where when I know I can eat as much as I can I get overwhelmed that I feel full instantly. That’s why I try to limit visits in buffet restaurants, it’s not worth it in my case.

Bee and I chose  some meats  and seafood we wanted to try first and some veggies for the soup.

Mango Soya Ice Cream
Oct 9th, 2010 by niceyfemme

I’ve always wanted to cook and make things that we (consumers) just normally buy  in supermarkets. Learning how to do them myself give me some kind of satisfaction, or pride maybe, that I am able to make it myself and most of the time make even better and healthier versions.

I guess I am just really trying hard to find ways to still enjoy the food I like without the guilt. Like ice cream. I know it’s bad for us and occasional surrender to the cravings is ok but me being me, when I eat I want to be able to eat until I am satisfied and with guilt, I will never be satisfied. So I try to cook/prepare food (in this case, ice cream) so we can have yummy ice cream without feeling guilty.

First time I experimented with Soy Ice Cream, it wasn’t good I have to admit. There’s something in it that I can’t take. Blame that on the silken tofu I used which I found in Robinson’s supermarket. I knew the consistency is not good so I brought back home the type of silken tofu I’m used to in Singapore.

And this time I experimented with Philippine mangoes which I believe is the sweetest in the world. The “sweet” mangoes I tried in Singapore is not even sweet. Well I bought it from SM, the overripe mangoes. Cheap at Php25 for 2 pieces of mangoes.

This is so good that even Mommy approved of this, given her being picky. :)

Here’s my recipe:

1 Box of Silken tofu (I used the extra smooth one)

1 cup plain soy milk

Chinese Lantern Festival
Sep 22nd, 2010 by niceyfemme

Despite my recent weight gain and my desire to cut down on food intake, a real bad case of serious craving hit me last night. I wanted pineapple fried rice and chicken satay in Chinatown. Exactly the food I used to eat often two years ago with a close friend.

So instead of heading home after some shopping (which is really tiring), I dragged Bee to go to Chinatown instead.

Then these pretty lanterns greeted us outside the MRT station.

Maxwell Hainanese Chicken Rice
Aug 12th, 2010 by niceyfemme

I have always had a quest to try and taste the best. Hainanese Chicken Rice (HCR) edition this time. I have read about one particular stall that most food bloggers and even a chef cum Tv Host have agreed to this. So we headed to a particular hawker center but too bad, we came in too late. They ran out of chickens. So I will save about that for later. Bee and I just had to settle to another chicken rice stall very close to the one I am referring to. Normally I wouldn’t try a stall just because of it’s proximity but this one has a long queue too. I don’t know if that’s because people find their chicken rice as good too, or they just settle to this one because the best one is closed already.

Maxwell Hainanese Chicken Rice stall has a pretty exterior and long queues of people that’s why we got curious and decided to try it as well. They are the only stall with long queue that night.

The photos in their stall sure look appetizing.

I am a roasted HCR girl. One of the criteria for good HCR for locals is tender meat/flesh, like smooth and silky. And you can see in these photo that the meat is silky soft.

Tofu madness
Aug 10th, 2010 by niceyfemme

I’ve been addicted to tofu and tau kwa (or tokwa) for a long time now, but this addiction has reach a different level in the last few days. I only want to eat tofu and tau kwa to the point where Bee and I will head to places where they possibly serve tofu. Unfortunately, in the area where we currently live now, there’s not a lot of hawker places nearby. We have to go to a mall that’s 10-15 minutes walk from here and it is mall food, I want hawker food.

Of course, eating out is more expensive than if you cook at home. Another thing, one serving is not enough for me! So most of the time I buy two servings and with rice it’s not cheap. It’s also not wise to eat out often.

Then last night, our friend who cooks for a living cooked a lot of food for us all. Can I just say yummy? Ah jie cooked chicken curry which was so goooood! It’s not like how we Filipinos have it but it’s wonderfully delicious. Then a veggie dish. I watch his pro self cook and when I tasted that very simple dish I was hooked! Then I got an idea to use that same process with tofu. And it was a success! This has been a very successful experiment for me. YUM.

Tau Kwa with bean sprouts and lots of red and green chili.
