Surreal
Sep 1st, 2010 by niceyfemme

I saw one in front of my eyes this afternoon when I went to Nassim Road. I was shocked a bit, the sound kept replaying in my head. It’s nothing major major (ehem!) just the side was crushed but I wonder how much it will cost to fix that since Ferrari parts aren’t cheap hehehe. The other car which was a chevrolet must be thinking he could have banged a less expensive car ahahha!

It was surreal really. We always see it in tv but when it happens in front of you live it is a very different experience. No photos no matter how much I wanted to shoot, I felt uneasy to capture other people’s “dark hour”. Oh good thing no one was hurt but it kinda caused a bit of a traffic jam in that area.

Pokwang’s Pink Bus
Jul 15th, 2010 by niceyfemme

I just made a post about Kris Aquino’s pink bus recently. Then abs-cbnnews reports that Kris gave it to comedienne Pokwang as Kris’ thank you gift for Pokwang’s support to Kris’ brother, the newly elected President Aquino.

Photo: darlasauler.com

Few months ago, Kris and Pokwang were in the popular pink bus on the way to Valenzuela to campaign for the now-President Aquino and his girlfriend Shalani Soledad. Pokwang was asking the driver how much diesel the bus consumes, how it runs and if it is still in good condition. Kris overheard the conversation then said out loud that if her brother wins the presidency, she will give the bus to Pokwang.

Then just last week, Kris fulfilled her promise and had the bus delivered to Pokwang’s house.

Pokwang, you’re one lucky woman to have Kris as a friend. With pink bus or not, she’s one great friend to have. Just start to worry now about motorhome repairs, maintenance, gas/diesel. But then that’s nothing compared to the convenience this will give you. :)

I want one! Please, please! Haha.

Extraordinary evening
Apr 3rd, 2010 by niceyfemme

Yeah something unusual happened yesterday. It all started with our regular activity, just Bee and I heading to a big and popular food court in the East because I wanted him to taste my new discovery. This is our favorite activity together*.  I love trying different stalls, hawkers, restaurants you get the idea.

Like here.  So late at night we still decided to go out and try a new stall that just opened.

Bee’s favorite at the moment. Char Kway Teow. He found a good stall even I got hooked with this when I don’t even like it before.

My Favorite Song Ever
Sep 7th, 2009 by niceyfemme

This is the song I always imagine The One for me will sing for me with all his heart and soul.

I’ve been listening to this song for years and I haven’t had and still no sign at all of getting tired of it…

This song is just so simple and yet so sincere.

Everything about this song, the music, the lyrics, the way he sang this, it’s just perfect. Singing from the heart and from the soul.

I love Joe Thomas.

Are you the one who will sing this song for me?

I can’t buy you fancy rings
Or all of the expensive things you’re used to baby
No trips around the world no diamonds or pearls
To give to you baby
But what i’ve got a give is more precious
Than you’ll ever know
My deepest inner feelings my heart and soul

Chorus:
Cause all that i am is a man in love with you
Cause all that i am is a man who’s heart is true
And in love with you

Oh baby
Oh girl, yeah, yeah

Girl i know you’re not blind
Cause when i look into your eyes, you meet me half way
Yes you do
Just accept me as i am
Try to understand, that i want you always
Just give me the chance and i’ll show you
The world my love, yeah, yeah
My deepest inner feeling, my heart and soul

Yeah yeah yeah

Denying all you aren’t
I know you have your doubts about me (your doubts about me)
Just put them all aside
And follow where your heart leads

Cause all that i am is a man who loves you
All that i am is a man whose heart is true
Cause all that i am is a man who loves you
Man in love with you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oooohh, yeah, yeah
Oh, ooo, yeah
Man in love with you

MAPSA – Makati’s Yellow Police
Aug 24th, 2009 by niceyfemme

Last week I went home to Bulacan to visit my Nanay (Lola-Grandmother). Everything was fine, not too traffic, just the usual dose of traffic we all experience here in Manila.

Had to be in my Mom’s office by 1630H, so we could try to avoid traffic. By, 1600H I was already in Makati Ave., corner Gil Puyat Ave (formerly Buendia), parked in the Petron station there, ate some ice cream and waited for a friend. Around 1645H had to go to my Mom’s office, I was in a hurry but still careful.

Guess what? A MAPSA (Makati Public Safety Assistance) yellow police stopped me and asked for my license then told me I was swerving! My ass i wasn’t! I knew what was happening (you know what I mean) but I don’t want to do it. Why would I accept or admit Im wrong when I was  not? It’s just not me. So I waited for my ticket. It took him forever to write that little ticket of his! I have to admit though that because I hate what he’s doing and I was in a hurry then and I felt like he’s giving me trouble for something I didn’t do, I lost my cool. I shouted, “What’s taking forever for that ticket?! And I’ll be needing your name too!” He gave me an obstruction ticket, wherein he said he should write there swerving violation which has a higher penalty. He’s trying to “negotiate” something and I knew that. I said, “I don’t care! Give me the ticket and Im not giving you any money!”.

I realized that those yellow police are there to wait for some traffic violations or even make some, and not to help make the traffic better. Seems like they have lost sight of their main purpose here.

Btw, can they really confiscate your license at first offense? I know that they could only do so when you are involved in an accident or when it’s your third offense already and you haven’t paid yet. And that only a certified policeman can write the ticket and not a yellow policeman. Ooohh! I had a lotta things to contest.

I actually planned to go there and get my license myself and make a complaint. Give them their own dose of medicine but it’s word of their own against mine so I let my mom have someone get it for me. But next time, Ooohh I hope there won’t be a next one but if there is, I’ll make sure I’ll record everything. I know better now.

I can see that Makati City, like Singapore is a fine city. I don’t contest Singapore’s way of doing it. But Makati’s? I guess the money from traffic violations, go to the city’s fund, then to Mayor Binay’s informercials.

I hate politics! and money! Root of all evil.

OMG! Breastfeeding….. at 8 years old
Aug 20th, 2009 by niceyfemme

While the first post I posted is the cutest and most adorable clip I’ve seen recently, this one kind of makes you think if this is just simply natural or not.

I thought that kids who still drink milk in bottles at around 6 or 7 is a little beyond normal then what do we call this? I mean breastfeeding is one of the most beautiful thing in the world but extended for this long?

It’s her body and they’re her kids so it’s her right, right?

Is there even nutrients in them like when they were a baby? I’m no expert here so….

Scientist believe that extended breastfeeding produce higher I.Q. in children… So given that, will you consider breastfeeding your kids until 8? Or beyond that?

Michael Jackson’s amazing side
Jul 27th, 2009 by niceyfemme

Im so touched with this. Deep inside me i’ve always felt and believed that Michael is a nice and down to earth man. This just proves the belief I had. Now i’m even sadder.

Manila Hotel’s former PR officer Gwen Cariño writes about her close encounter with hotel guest Michael Jackson in December 1996.

mj

MANILA, Philippines – When I was a PR officer at Manila Hotel, I was assigned to head the annual Orphan’s Christmas Party where 300 children from different orphanages around Metro Manila were treated to a day of fun and surprises. It was one of the biggest projects on my plate and it was such a challenge to focus on work the day before the big event, knowing Michael Jackson was billeted in the hotel.

Two nights before, I had been fortunate to be part of his welcome line at the hotel lobby together with the rest of the PR and sales staff but was content enough to see him walk by.

The day before, a guy claiming to be Michael Jackson’s aide from Mamarao Productions came to the office. I couldn’t recall his name but he looked for the “person in charge” and said his boss had read the announcement about the event in the Dear Guest flyers we had circulated to all the rooms a week before. Michael wanted to know how he could help. His aide went up to the Penthouse and down to the PR office several times after we gave our suggestions.

Michael offered to fill up the 300 loot bags with goodies and toys, candies and chocolates. But after getting close to 50 sponsors, it was actually a problem for us to dispose of everything.
So I thought hard…how can the King of Pop meaningfully join the affair? I couldn’t possibly have him be with the kids in the palayok game or the pabitin as he might end up being mobbed! And since the annual event was really all about giving, I mustered all my courage and told the Mamarao guy that the best thing I could think of was for Michael to literally be present to help distribute the loot bags, sign autographs and pose with the children for photos. “Wow, that may not be easy. You’re talking about handing goodie bags to 300 children and I can just imagine the chaos. We’ll see, Ms. Jacinto. I’ll get back to you,” he said.

Lunch break came and it was the most hurried one I ever took in my entire life. It wasn’t until after 5 p.m. that Michael‘s aide came back and said, “Michael is more than happy to do whatever you suggest. How do we go about it tomorrow?”
I wanted to scream. I had to calm myself and regain composure as the Lizzie Maguire in me said, “Get real, get back into focus.”

We agreed that Michael would join after the games, musical program and snacks, and at the last part to give out the loot bags. My colleague Annette Africano and boss Dulce Agnir requested for additional security around the garden and the stage area as this was where we decided to distribute the gifts. We made sure the children would form an orderly line.

Then the moment arrived. It was at the Champagne Gardens on Dec. 7, 1996. I was surprised to see him walking towards us, guided by his aide. Michael came up to me as I had to brief him.
“Hi, how are you? Thanks so much for letting me in, I know I’m early ’coz I didn’t want to miss the program.”
I said, “Are you kidding? Thanks so much for volunteering! Here’s what Michael, why don’t you just sit here and watch the musical numbers before we get into the gift giving. I will have to tweak the program a bit.”
He replied, “Sure, anything you say… (pausing to look at my name tag) Gwen!”
I was stunned at how incredibly sweet and modest he was. And in my mind it was, “Oh my God, this is really happening!”

Amazing how he patiently sat through the whole program. Carol Banawa, then an Ang TV mainstay couldn’t believe MJ was watching her perform. She had her red blouse signed by him right after her number. Then followed Stefano Mori’s dance number. Later, his back up singers and dancers came up on stage followed by select kids from different orphanages who danced to the beat of Billie Jean. Oh, the smile on Michael’s face was just amazing.

Then we announced that Michael will be distributing gifts onstage. I explained to him that there’s a loot bag for the younger kids and another for the older ones and he nodded. The thrill and excitement he gave those children was incredibly touching. It was in between the gift bag distribution that I caught a glimpse of MJ, not as a performer but as a person.

mj2

It was one in the afternoon. Santa Claus (David Endriga, a friend of fellow PR officer Francis Capistrano) was with us. The heat was scourging and I was worried that Michael felt so hot with his black long-sleeved signature attire and hat.

“Are you alright Michael? We can let you take a break,” I asked.
He said, “I’m cool Gwen. Just imagine how Santa feels inside his velvet suit and beard. We’ll be fine.”
I never heard him complain or say a word about how hot it was or how long the line was. He had the most beautiful manners. He didn’t even ask for a drink or a towel to wipe his sweat but one of our banquet staff made sure he got a glass of fresh orange juice.

An hour passed and we were halfway through gift-giving when we noticed that the garden was getting filled up. Suddenly, there were people from media, politicians, officials and hotel guests including those in a wedding reception at the nearby Champagne Room who deserted the newly-weds just to get a glimpse of the King of Pop.
“Oh oh, this isn’t supposed to be, I’m so sorry,” I said. It’s all right, we’ll get through it,” Michael said smiling.
As we finished giving out the last loot bag to an 11-year-old orphan, a new line of more kids and adults formed. Michael’s bodyguard, Wayne, said. “We can leave now.”

Michael replied calmly, “We can’t leave when there are still people in line. It’s Christmas, dude.”
I felt my heart beat faster and the hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood up. He wasn’t just the most electrifying performer, but the most generous person.

One of the most memorable moments was when a lady came up to him for an autograph. Laughing and holding his tummy, he said “Hey Gwen, you’ve gotta check this out. He whispered, “It’s a blank check. The lady is making me sign on a blank check.”

We laughed hard and little did we know that it wasn’t even half of the comedy. He later showed me and Wayne other stuff people would use or pick up on the ground when they couldn’t find paper for him to sign on. One lady made him sign at the back of her elegant, designer Filipiniana gown. One teenager came up to him holding a dead leaf and another one, a popped balloon. Imagine how our laughter ballooned as well.

It was an amazing, genuine experience. At one point he asked if I was going to catch his History concert and I said “tomorrow night.”
“Oh, you’ll have a blast!” Michael told me.

At this point he became concerned about the stage as adults outnumbered the kids. His face had nervousness written all over it but he still didn’t complain. He tapped the wooden floor with his foot several times making sure it was sturdy enough not to fall apart. “I’ve experienced the stage collapse and I just want to make sure we’re all safe here,” he explained.
Half of me wanted the line to finish because we were literally melting and worried about our safety, but half of me didn’t, knowing that once the line ended, Michael will leave.

At some point it did end. I managed to get an autograph for my sisters and me before our general manager, Clem Pablo, requested him to sing Give Love on Christmas Day.
Cesar Sarino, one of the hotel’s officials, addressed his thank you note to the King of Pop. Then I saw his guards and aides whisking Michael off stage.
I said in my mind, “Oh man, I didn’t even have the chance to say goodbye.”
Suddenly, I saw Michael return on stage and say, “Thanks so much to you and your team, Gwen. This really means a lot.”
Then he held me beside him and said, “I’ll see you at the concert.”

As Michael Jackson is laid to rest and returned to pristine condition in the afterlife, these two incredible acts of the King of Pop — volunteering for charity and unselfishly spending time with the less fortunate, will forever be the way I will remember this man.

Eugenio Vagni is free!
Jul 14th, 2009 by niceyfemme

He’s been captured by Abu Sayyaf since 15 January 2009. After 6 months of captivity, because of massive prayers from his family and people who simply care (like me) he’s been freed.

Mr. Eugenio Vagni works for the International Committee of the Red Cross as a specialist for water-supply systems. Those who worked with him has nothing but praises for the Italian. People loves him because of his sense of humor and because he interacts with everybody, he doesn’t choose who to only talk to. He talks to everyone.

Before it was just one of those news for me. A hostage of the Abu Sayyaf but when I got to see him in the news’ coverage of his release, I knew he’s a genuinely nice guy. You just know even just by looking at his face. The way he smiles is so real, even after everything he has gone through these last few months that most of us will never understand how hard because we will not experience it.

He does not hold any grudge to the group who held him hostage for a long time. During the interview, he mentioned that even though they kept him there, they respected him and called him “Apo”. I believe it’s what you call an older brother? Or what you call your father? And one thing he will miss is the food there, he said, “Dried fish and Datu Puti!” Wow he’s just so down to earth! Datu Puti is a brand of vinegar in the Philippines.

I felt a sense of pity for the old man when I saw how much weight he lost. He looked so different. He mentioned he lost 20 kgs., thats 44 lbs. They had to walk long distances and aside from his age (he’s 61 years old) he is also suffering from hernia which made it extra harder for him.

It’s clear that he’s a good person, a person full of wisdom. He’s a family man who loves his wife and young daughter so dearly. He cannot wait to see his family.

To Mr. Eugenio Vagni, I hope this experience didn’t traumatize you and change your feelings towards the Filipino people. We hold you dear in our hearts. This may sound crazy but I do hope you come back someday. We need more nice people like you who cares genuinely. Thank you very much for helping our fellow Filipinos. And in behalf of the Abu Sayyaf group, I believe they would want to say sorry too for the hardships you experienced.

I wish you good health!

We love you Mr. Eugenio Vagni!
